My Newsletter is changing
Over the last 8 months I have published a monthly Newsletter. There were a few reasons I started doing this, firstly - I enjoy writing. That might make me strange, but look around - we’re all a little strange. The second reason was similar - I enjoy reading. I read anything and everything I can get my hands on, articles, scientific publications, magazines, I even subscribe to a monthly book delivery service. In my daily to-do list I have items dedicated to reading, this includes “read 1 scientific article” and “read book for 25 minutes.”
Based on my love of writing and reading the next logical step (at least in my mind) was to write about the things that I read. Initially I considered doing a monthly blog, but I prefer my blog articles to be spontaneous posts about what I have been doing or the occasional philosophical rant. Instead of a blog I decided that if people wanted to hear about what I had been reading then why not start a Monthly Newsletter where I talk about the things I’ve been reading that month.
Since the start of the year this is what I have been doing, and it’s been going well. I’ve only had a small handful of people subscribe (for context here “small handful” means 7), and I imagine an even smaller number actually bother to read it. But that was never my goal; it was just a good way to keep my writing skills sharp and make sure that I keep my reading habit up. A big part of the Newsletter focused on scientific publications; as a researcher I have to read several papers a week, so I figured why not include them in the Newsletter.
But things are changing. The biggest thing is that I have a new job (I’ll give you a minute to applaud). I’m moving away from research and going into medical communications. I’ll still be reading papers I just won’t be using that knowledge to do research; instead I’ll be telling other people about that research. As I prepare to start this new job I have also decided to update my newsletter. Rather than being just a monthly reading list this new format will be titled “Big news, Little News” (although that’s just a working title, if you can think of anything better let me know). Rather than just highlighting what I’ve been reading I’m also going to be talking about the latest science and technology news. I’ll be summarising the biggest scientific headlines with some keys links to reading materials, then I’ll do the same for some smaller stories that you might have missed.
Obviously this newsletter won’t be for everyone, and I don’t want to be clogging up your already cluttered inbox. But the internet can be a busy place and scrolling through the current news can bring on an existential crisis. Instead if you just want to get some of the key science and technology headlines (with the occasional humorous joke and maybe the odd pun) then that is what my newsletter can offer. And if you ever want to talk about the news headlines, anything science related or which is the best D&D class (Rouge, clearly) then just respond to my newsletter and I’ll get back to you - I’m always up for a discussion.
